CHADWELL DEFINES SINGLE-SEX EDUCATION AS A CHOICE FOR PARENTS

David Chadwell, who works in the South Carolina Department of Education to support single-sex initiatives was invited by EASSE to explain his experience in the USA. Principals, teachers, students and politicians enjoyed a lively and stimulating lectu

Chadwell’s approach to single-sex education comes from the combination of fourteen years as a classroom teacher, three years as an administrator of a single-gender program, knowledge about recent research on gender differences, and a statewide view of organizing, training, and troubleshooting teaching within single-gender programs.

He used the data from the PISA tests in reading and writing not only to show the differences between countries but to show an absolutely amazing difference between boys and girls in each country. Gender differences, which show that boys are staying behind, are reproduced in every country to a maximum of 55 points in Finland, one of the top leaders in academic achievement.

His examples and anecdotes showed that boys and girls learn in a different way in six broad categories: seeing, hearing, engaging, processing, responding, and choosing. It is the role of teachers to understand these differences and use appropriate teaching skills which facilitate learning in both girls and boys.

For those who are afraid of single-sex schools as regards socialization, he remarked that school is one part of the day. Students have access to and experience with the other sex before school, after school, both in the street and at home. The thesis that both sexes live together in the world outside school would imply that school is meant to reproduce the same environment. However, he pointed at the fact that schools are an artificial environment, where knowledge is divided into subjects and the day is organized according to a fixed timetable. In fact, he said that school should be focused in academics rather than in socialization, as it happens in Asiatic countries where the educational standards of achievement are higher.

At the end, he encouraged politicians to allow the evaluation of data and the promotion of research in this field so that parents can have a real choice, as it is happening in the USA with the Program NCLB (No Child Left Behind) which is aimed to reduce the poor results in education.
